These days, the cold and frigid temperatures permeate the days and nights. But despite this, there’s a superfood here to save you day from boring and humdrum of the same old recipes. Citrus fruits, including, lemons, limes & oranges (as well as many others) peak in traditional wintertime depending on where you live. In northern US, that means January into February.
There’s nothing like a little citrus to brighten up the winter months. So many options! I found resources here and here for picking out and selecting your most favorite options. Once you return from shopping, you will need to figure out what to do with your fruit. In general, your fruit will make a great accompaniment to chicken or fish, or in salads or on its own. Here is some inspiration to get you started.
The Zest of Life
Citrus, as mentioned, can brighten up your salads, or add a sweet note to chicken or fish. The zest, or grated rind, is also used in some recipes. Zest is a delicious way to capture the very essence of a citrus fruit, as the rind is also edible in small quantities. Some candy shops also carry such delectable treats as candied orange peel or candied grapefruit peel. Check in with your local grocer to see if they carry any of these sweet treats.
Citrus keeps best in the refrigerator. I like to keep mine in an airtight container. When it’s time to eat, I like to let it warm up a bit but it tastes delicious right out of the fridge too.
